How Salesforce helped plant 10 million new trees

There’s a lot of talk about greenwashing. Let’s focus on a company that doesn’t just go the extra mile, but puts most corporate social responsibility programs to shame. In Madagascar, where 90% of the country’s forests have been lost to deforestation, the tech company Salesforce is working with a nonprofit to pay workers to plant and protect 10 million trees. Furthermore, a little over a year ago, the company pledged to support the conservation and restoration of 100 million trees by 2030. It also partnered with the World Economic Forum to bring together companies, governments, and nonprofits around the much larger goal of planting and protecting a trillion trees by the end of the decade through a new platform called 1t.org.

Hermès unveils handbag made from fungi

In 2013, Philip Ross and Sophia Wang co-founded MycoWorks, a biomaterials company dedicated to bringing new mycelium materials to the world. What is mycelium? — it’s the fine network of threads of the organism that produces mushroom. Three years in the making, the collaboration between Hermès and MycoWorks marks the first object made with mycelium. In comparison to similar materials in the marketplace, MycoWorks and its material is a world ahead in terms of strength, durability, and feel.

New podcast describes memes to blind and visually impaired people

The issue for blind people is generally not in being unaware of cultural references. They have the same cultural reference points but need a more textual way to access the images. To that end, Will Butler, VP of community at Be My Eyes, started a new podcast called Say My Meme. In the podcast they literally describes some of the internet’s most famous memes for a blind audience. The podcast episodes, which air every week, are themed: So far, the hosts have delved into cat memes, sassy memes, and ’90s memes.
