$1 Billion to Save Forests

Last year, the planet lost more than 30 million acres of tree cover. More than 100 global leaders, who collectively are responsible for 85% of the world’s forests, have just pledged to stop and reverse deforestation by the end of the decade. One part of the global effort is the LEAF Coalition, an organization that will use corporate funding to pay countries to keep forests standing. It’s announcing that it just raised $1 billion so far.

It can be hard to get bees to do their vital work in indoor farms or greenhouses. Instead, the plants may need a little robotic assistance to reproduce. The Stick-Bug does exactly that. There are a few reasons growers may need a robot to help them pollinate their crops. One is the decline of bees, harmful pesticides, and climate change. But there are also certain places bees don’t like, or places they can’t really exist.

Fairtrade Helps Cacao Farmers

Fairtrade International is working to give cocoa farmers a fairer future. To date, the companies Fairtrade works with have collectively generated $200.8m for cocoa-farming co-operatives to spend on projects of their choice that benefit their businesses and communities. “There is absolutely no excuse for the child or forced labor, or deforestation in chocolate. We (…) showed it is possible to buy cocoa in a different way and also be a successful, fast-growing company,” says Paul Schoenmaker, CEO of Tony Chocolonely.
